12 TISSUE SALTS

Our bodies are comprised of water, organic material and inorganic matter (minerals). The 12 Tissue Salts, also called Cell Salts or Bioplasm, make up the inorganic matter and are vital to cellular reproduction. The material necessary for cellular rebuilding is supplied from the blood. If the blood is deficient in any of these minerals, then the cells cannot rebuild properly and there is disease.

The 12 Tissue Salts Are:

CALCAREA FLUORICUM – Calcium Fluoride

This salt supplies elasticity to the tissues, walls of blood vessels, muscles, connective tissue, surface of bones and also enamel of teeth. If Calcarea Fluor is deficient, there will be problems such as swelling or hardening of glands, hemorrhoids (piles), enlarged veins, sluggish circulation, tendency to have cracks in the skin (palms and between the toes), loose teeth, rapid decay of teeth, muscular weakness. Symptoms are worse in humid weather and better with heat and massage.

CALCAREA PHOSPHORICUM – Calcium Phosphate

This salt restores tone to weakened organs and tissues which is necessary for blood coagulation, formation of bone and teeth, and aids in the normal growth of children. It is used for teething, rickets, digestion (it is a constituent of saliva), anemia, and for healing fractures. Symptoms are worse motion; cold; change of weather and better with rest; lying down.

CALCAREA SULPHURICUM – Calcium Sulphate

This salt is a blood purifier and promotes formation of new skin. It helps the liver with the removal of waste from the blood stream. It is used for adolescent acne, dry eczema in children, minor skin ailments and also helps fight infections. Symptoms are worse from working in water; washing; walking; and hot room. It is better from open air; eating; uncovering; local heat.

FERRUM PHOSPHORICUM – Iron Phosphate

This salt carries oxygen throughout the body, especially in the blood. It also strengthens the walls of the blood vessels. It is used at the onset in conditions of inflammation and fever and is purported to stop blood flow in cuts by crushing a few of the tablets and applied directly to the wound. Because it carries oxygen to the blood, it is used for anemia and is also good for elderly people. Symptoms are worse by motion; excitement; and warmth. Better by cold and slow motion.

KALI MURIATICUM – Potassium Chloride

This salt is found in blood corpuscles, muscles, nerve and brain cells and inter-cellular fluids. It is essential in the formation of brain cells. This remedy is especially useful for recuperation after an illness in re-establishing health. Excellent for catarrhal conditions, such as congested eustachian tubes. I use it for ear pain when flying and it is a life saver. Symptoms are worse from fatty food, rich food; motion. Better from cold drinks; rubbing.

KALI PHOSPHORICUM – Potassium Phosphate

This salt can be called a natural tranquilizer. It helps in grief, despair, upset nerves, children who develop stomach problems, headaches or “nervous disorders” because of school. It is also quite useful in skin ailments such as shingles. Any condition brought about by “nerves” can be treated with this remedy. Symptoms are worse from excitement; noise; exertion; cold air; being alone, and, pain and itching worse from 2 am to 5 am. Better from rest; eating; heat; gentle motion.

KALI SULPHURICUM – Potassium Sulphate

This salt is also an oxygen carrier and works well with Ferrum Phos. It is used in ailments of the lungs and sinuses. While Ferrum Phos is used in early stages of inflammation, Kali Sulph is used in the later stages. Kali Sulph has a sticky yellow discharge from skin or mucous membranes. This remedy is essential for healthy skin. Symptoms are worse in warm room; evening and better in open air.

MAGNESIA PHOSPHORICUM – Magnesium Phosphate

This salt is the anti-spasmodic remedy. Great for muscular cramps, spasms, darting pains. Use it for sciatica and for neuralgic pains. It works well with Calcarea Phos for cramping pains. Symptoms are worse on the right side; cold; drafts; touch and better from heat; pressure; bending double.

NATRUM MURIATICUM – Sodium Chloride

The prime function of this salt is to maintain the proper degree of moisture within the cells. Natrum Mur also produces hydrochloric acid which is utilized in the digestive processes. Excessive moisture or dryness; craving for salt or salty foods can indicate the need for Natrum Mur. Symptoms are worse in the morning, 10 am; at the seaside; cold weather; noise; warmth and better open air; lying on right side; cold bathing; pressure against the back; tight clothing.

NATRUM PHOSPHORICUM – Sodium Phosphate

This salt regulates the acid in the stomach – it is an acid neutralizer. It also aids in the assimilation of fats. An imbalance of acid can cause dyspepsia, digestive problems and heartburn. It is also used in rheumatic conditions caused by excess uric acid. Symptoms are worse during thunderstorms; menstruation; in the afternoon or evening; and aversion to open air.

NATRUM SULPHURICUM – Sodium Sulphate

This salt eliminates excess water – it removes waste from the cells. It controls the function of the liver and is also useful in digestion. Conditions aggravated by humidity may require Natrum Sulph. This remedy is also vital in head injuries (after Arnica). Symptoms are worse from humidity; dampness; music; lying on left side and better in dry weather; pressure; changing position.

SILICEA (SILICA) – Pure Flint

This salt acts as a cleanser and eliminator. It promotes suppuration (abscesses and boils). Silicea is found in the hair, skin, nails, and surface of bones. It can cause the re-absorbtion of scar tissue. Aids in offensive perspiration. Symptoms are worse at night; morning; open air; cold air; before a storm and better from heat; warm room ; summer.

The descriptions listed above are just a sampling of what each individual salt can do. All 12 salts can be combined and taken daily as you would a vitamin. The recommended potencies are 3X, 6X, 12X and 30X.

How to Find a Remedy for Acute Conditions
Whether you are new to Homeopathy or an authority in the field, it can sometimes be difficult to find a remedy to help with your particular problem. You may have specific symptoms that are easy to identify but have no idea where or how to find a remedy to treat them. There are a number of available books as well as a few web sites that can make this process a bit easier for you.

Ailment Search
One of the easiest things to do is to use the Search Remedies by Ailment feature and see if your particular problem is listed. If your symptoms don’t match any listed in that category, then you can follow the instructions below.

Materia Medica and Repertory
You will need these 2 books to find your remedy. The Materia Medica is the book of Remedies. There are a number of Materia Medicas to choose from. I would say the most popular one is the book by William Boericke. Most people start with Boericke’s and continue to use it in their quest in finding a remedy. Another Materia Medica that is popular is the one by Robin Murphy, Nature’s Materia Medica. This is a more “modern” book and will have the “newer” remedies in it.

The Repertory is the book of Symptoms. It is broken down into body parts and also includes “Mind” and a section called “Generals”. You can find the Materia Medica and Repertory here in the REFERENCE Section.

Using the Materia Medica and Repertory
If you do not have a Materia Medica and a Repertory, yet, you can go to this web site and use the one online.

Let’s say you have a congested head cold with a headache, sneezing and other symptoms. Go to the above web site and click on REPERTORY. The first symptom you may want to look up may be headache. Scroll down to HEAD and then click on Headache. Scroll through the entire section, stopping at the symptoms that you have, write down the remedies associated with that symptom. You can hit your BACK button to take you back to the previous page, scroll to NOSE, click on Sneezing and scroll through that section writing down the remedies that appear for the symptoms that you have. You will do this for each body part/symptom that you have. When you have finished, find the remedy or remedies that appear for all or most of your symptoms.

If you are doing this with the book, you will notice some remedies are in bold print, some in italics, and some in plain print. These are assigned point values. Bold is 3 points, italics are 2, and plain is 1. On the web site, you have italic and plain print. So use the value of 2 for italics and 1 for plain print. When you are writing down the remedies for each symptom, assign the remedy a point value, i.e., Belladonna 2. If a remedy, Belladonna for example, appears in a number of symptoms, then write the total point value for Belladonna. Take your next remedy, and add up the total points for that one also and, so on.

Now you will go to the Materia Medica. Take the remedy with the highest total point value and go back to the web site. We will use Belladonna for an example. Click on B (for Belladonna). Then click on Belladonna. Read the symptoms associated with Belladonna for whatever symptom/body part you are looking for. Do this for each remedy you have selected. PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO MODALITIES which will be found towards the bottom of the page. MODALITIES are what makes the problem better or worse, when the symptoms appear, how the symptom is affected by temperature, etc. This is one of the most important things to base your remedy selection on.

So this is how you find your remedy. You will choose the remedy that best fits your symptom picture. Please note that not all your symptoms may be covered by any one remedy.

Self Help Books
If the above method is too overwhelming, there are a number of Acute Care Treatment books available. These can be invaluable when looking for help.

As you can see, this process is very time consuming and definitely not as easy as it sounds. A Homeopathic doctor does basically the same thing I have described but he has the advantage of having years of training, experience with the remedies, honing his skills of observation and being able to interpret nuances of both the patient and the remedy. It is most definitely recommended that you see a homeopathic medical doctor in your area. Also, he/she can detect if there is a serious underlying cause that may not be apparent to a lay person. Yes, it may be expensive but in the long run you benefit immeasurably from this holistic treatment.

Again, this is for ACUTE conditions. For CHRONIC or LIFE THREATENING conditions, it is up to you to act responsibly and seek professional, medical help.

Have you heard of the remedy……..Verbascum Thapsus
Verbascum Thaps is made from a biennial herb which is common in the United States and northern and central Europe. The whole fresh herb is used. It’s also called Mullein.

Some of the symptoms associated with this remedy are:

• Face – facial neuralgia, particularly left side; pressing teeth together. Pain comes in flashes.
• Ears – earache with sense of obstruction; deafness. Mullein Oil is extremely useful for earaches. Warm the oil and place a drop or two in the ear and place a small piece of cotton in ear.
• Respiratory – HOARSENESS; voice deep, harsh, and sounds like a trumpet. Cough which is worse at night, during sleep; asthma.
• Urinary – Constant dribbling;enuresis, burning urination; pressure in bladder.

My oldest son contracted infantile botulism when he was 4 months old. He spent 3 weeks on a ventilator and 5 weeks total in the hospital. When he was released, he was on two laxatives because the toxin had paralyzed his bowel, and he still couldn’t go to the bathroom. I took him off the laxatives as soon as possible because I didn’t want him dependent on them. But his constipation became extremely severe. Not even suppositories and enemas would always work. I decided to try a remedy, but didn’t really think it would help (I was inexperienced). I gave Calc. Carb. 30c. He had a spontaneous bowel movement that day and was not constipated again for some weeks.

Two years ago I had a serious case of bronchitis. I had severe shortness of breath and felt extremely cold. I thought I would have to go to the hospital. But I took one dose of Calc. Carb. 200c, and within minutes I could breath and felt much more positive. By the end of the week, the bronchitis was so much better that I was functioning almost normally.

My 3 year old son began to come down with chest congestion one evening, it came on very rapidly with lots of rattling mucous and wheezing. I gave him one dose of Sulphar 30c and within one hour there was no more wheezing. He woke the next morning with no sickness whatever.

My oldest son has ADHD and tends to get very hysterical and emotional. It can become nearly impossible to deal with him. He also has trouble sleeping and tends to jerk and twitch in his sleep. On one occasion when it had gotten very bad, I gave him a dose of Ignatia 30c. He very quickly composed himself and for the rest of the week was a different child, calm and positive.

My kids have never suffered with bee stings. Every time they get stung, I give them a dose of Apis 30c, and the pain is gone within 5 minutes.

I took Phos. 30c for severe arthritic hip and low back pain. The pain disappeared, and my chiropracter noted that my adjustment was very easily the next time I went in. I told him about the remedy, and he asked me to bring him some information about homeopathy.

Holidays and Homeopathy

It’s holiday time and many people struggle just to get through it. Instead of being a time to enjoy family and friends, it turns into a time of sadness, anxiety, feeling overwhelmed and over stressed. Hopefully, you won’t need any remedies but if you do, here’s a list to choose from.

Sadness/Grief
Depression is a major concern during this time of year. Too many people feel so sad and lonely during the holidays whether it’s due to loss of a loved one due to death, divorce or break up, or, if you can’t be with those you love. Try Ignatia. It is a major grief remedy and a key indication is sighing. This is the remedy for someone who can’t overcome their loss. For a deep depression with thoughts of suicide, use Aurum Metallicum and get professional help.

Anger/Resentment

• Staphysagria – You may not want to see certain people because of insults, slights, etc. Staphysagria can help you to “deal with it”.
• Natrum Mur should be considered also if the person is holding a grudge. Consolation aggravates. People needing Natrum Mur tend to eat a lot of salt.

Anxiety

• Lycopodium – just wants everything to go off without a hitch if they are hosting an event. There is self-doubt and low self-esteem. Lycopodium people like sweets.A
• Arsenicum – wants everything to be just perfect. There is restlessness and anxiety; ailment is worse from midnight to 2 am.
• Argentum Nit – there will be restlessness with pacing. This remedy is also good for stage fright.
• Gelsemium – nervous anticipation but person just sits and thinks about it. Another remedy for stage fright.
• Aconite – Fearful that things won’t go as planned. The key word here is “fear”.
• Coffea Cruda – Cannot settle down at bedtime because they had a stimulant earlier.

Overindulgence

• Nux Vomica – for over-eating, over-drinking, over-doing. It is an “excess” remedy. It’s also known as the hangover remedy. If there are digestive problems, stomach ache, constipation, irritability and chilliness then consider Nux Vomica.
• Pulsatilla – Would be for overindulgence of rich, creamy foods. Pulsatilla wants to be coddled and needs fresh air.
• Carbo Vegetabilis – for gas, distension.
• Arsenicum Alb – Food poisoning.

Children
If they become irritable with crying, screaming and don’t know what they want, give them Chamomilla.
Coffea Cruda is for children who are all wound up and unable to sleep.

Don’t forget these same remedies apply to your PETS. With people tramping through the house, plenty of food to get to, even having to travel, pets can get stressed out and also depressed if they have lost someone they loved.

Have you heard of the remedy……..Viscum Album?
Viscum Alb is made from Mistletoe of the European variety. The tincture is made from the fresh leaves and berries.

Some of the symptoms associated with this remedy are:

• Respiratory – FEELING OF SUFFOCATION WHEN LYING ON LEFT SIDE. Spasmodic cough. ASTHMA, if connected with gout or rheumatism.
• Heart – Weight and oppression of heart; as if a hand were squeezing it; ticking sensation about heart.
• Hearing – RHEUMATIC DEAFNESS.
• Extremeties – Rheumatism with TEARING PAINS. Sciatica with TEARING, shooting pains. General tremor in all muscles.

WORSE: winter, cold, stormy weather; in bed; movement; lying on left side.

Over the years, I have treated:

• A friend at work for poison ivy with one dose of Apis.
• Another co-worker with one dose of Kali Bichromium for a sinus headache.
• Another co-worker/friend whose dog was injured when she had backed into him with her car in her driveway. She was sure that he was just bruised but he was hiding under the house and she was concerned. I gave her a tube of Arnica and one of Ruta Graveoleons (each 30C) with instructions on how to give them. In 3 or 4 days she very happily returned my remedies and told me that she had great success with them. The dog was back to his normal self and she was saved the price of a vet bill. This was a woman who had no clue what homeopathics were but her desperate situation blessed her with an open mind and she was willing to try anything.
• I have chronic acid reflux and I use Nux Vomita 30C or Nat Phos 30C with prompt relief.
• I have treated “limping” tomcats with Ruta Graveoleons 30C (for sprains).
• I have treated kittens and cats and myself with Mercurius Vivus, as well as Pulsatilla for eye problems.
• I have used Rhus Tox and Oscillicocinum for early flu symptoms but only a couple of times over the years. I think my immune system has strengthened with the use of these remedies.
• What I consider to be a major personal healing occurred about 7 years ago when I got strep throat. I have never had such a painful sore throat. My sister happened to have a liquid homeopathic remedy for strep throat that she had gotten from a visit with a homeopath out of state. I took just a few dropperfuls of this and the next morning my sore throat was completely gone. I was delirious with joy!

Kinds of Coughs

Different coughs need different homeopathic remedies. There are coughs that are dry, tickling, mucus producing, croupy, burning, etc. Causes can range from lung infections, allergies, sinus infections, pulmonary obstruction, pollutants, smoking and so on. Acute coughs can be treated using remedies listed below and also in the Ailments section. Chronic coughs should be treated by a homeopathic practitioner.

• Anacardium Orientale – This cough is excited by talking. There is pressure in chest; also, cough after eating with vomiting.
• Bromium – There is a dry cough with hoarseness and also burning pain behind sternum. Cough can be spasmodic with rattling of mucus. Also used for whooping cough.
• Chamomilla – This remedy has a dry, tickling cough; rattling of mucus in chest. Person is whining and restless. Child asks for things then refuses them when offered. Very irritable, thirsty and hot.
• Coccus Cacti – This remedy can be used for whooping cough and spasmodic cough. There is accumulation of thick viscid mucus with difficult expectoration. Tickling in larynx, must swallow continually. Whooping cough attacks end with vomiting.
• Pertussinum – This remedy is one of just a very few nosodes which can be sold at a specific potency. A nosode is a remedy made from the disease and are almost always on prescription status. We sell it at a 30c and higher. This remedy is used for whooping cough and other spasmodic coughs.

Spongatos Cough Syrup is a pleasant tasting cough syrup that can be safely used for children of all ages.

Ingredients Include:

• Aconite
• Ipecac
• Hepar Sulph
• Spongia Tosta

Kennel Cough in Dogs

Kennel cough is very contagious. It is contracted from exposure to other dogs, such as in kennels, dog shows, dog parks, groomers, even veterinary clinics. Symptoms include a dry, hacking cough ending in gagging or retching. Can also have a clear watery discharge from the eyes and nose. Remedies listed in the Ailment section as well as those listed above can be used.

Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis (FVR)

FVR affects the eyes and upper respiratory tracts in cats. Sneezing, coughing, drooling thick saliva, watery discharge from eyes and fever are symtoms of FVR.
Remedies which can be used are:

• Aconite – Sudden onset, fever, first stages when you notice that Cat is not feeling well.
• Natrum Muriaticum – Starts with sneezing, may have white nasal discharge and may be thirsty.
• Nux Vomica – Cat will be irritable and does not want to be touched or held. Will go to another room to be alone.
• Pulsatilla – Greenish discharge from nose or eyes; wants attention, i.e., being held. Cat may be sleepy or sluggish.

Have you heard of the remedy……..Rumex Crispus?

Rumex is made from the herb Yellow Dock. The fresh root is used to make the tincture. A primary indication for Rumex is worse in evening from inhaling cold air. All coughing stops when covering entire body, including the head, with the bed covers. Respiratory symptoms include tickling in throat pit which causes coughing. There is mucosal discharge from nose and throat. Cough is dry and teasing which prevents sleep. Pressure aggravates.

Some of the conditions treated by this remedy are: Arthritis/Rheumatism, Bronchitis, Asthma, Diarrhea, and Coughs

My sister is law has been a firm believer in homeopathic remedies for the past ten years or more. She has suffered the giggles and rolling eyes and sighs of her family, including my husband for this time. She doesn’t push the remedies on anyone but offers them if the opportunity presents itself. One such opportunity presented itself one autumn afternoon almost two years ago when I was visiting her with my three children. My then 6 year old son was climbing a tree and a piece of bark dropped into his eye causing him a great deal of pain which was evident from the screaming and his lack of willingness to open his eye. When he finally did open his eye it was bright red, weepy and was obviously irritated. She gave him two tablets of arnica montana, but I was sure I would be taking him to the doctors office later that day. However, within a half hour the redness and weepinees were gone, his eye was crystal clear and he was climbing the tree again. Honestly, I was really surprised. It was that day I began to think perhaps there is something to all this homeopathy.

My youngest son is now almost 2. He tends to get sniffles that quickly develop into chest congetion that have him on a nubulizer for a week or so. He hasn’t actually been diagnosed with asthma as my daugther has but I suspect it is the same thing as his colds follow her pattern. Back in April 2007 our family went on an international trip for three weeks. As the date approached I was worried about them developing a cold while we were away. About a month before we were to go wouldn’t you know it, they both began to sniffle. If it was to follow the usual course I had grown to know well, within three days they would both be on the nubulizer three times a day for at least seven days. I would also have to take them into the doctors office every other day for observation, a daunting task in itself without the children being sick. I called my sister in law and asked her what I could do that would ward off a cold and chest congestion. She asked me about their personality at the time and how they were feeling right then and suggested Apis and Kail Muri for both of them. I administered the remedies as she suggested and within three days the sniffles were gone. I was so thankful and less amazed this time. I was a believer. The same thing happened one week before we left. Sniffles, this time a frantic call to my sister in law. Again she suggested Apis and Kali Muri, agian, no surprise, it worked.

That same week about half the children in my older sons second grade class were out of school due to strep throat. It seemed to be going around and around and around the school all winter long. I was worried we would have it but not develop symptoms until we were overseas. I called my sister in law again, ( she is now my family’s doctor ) and she suggested I get some Belladonna, for the headaches and Apis for the sore throats. One of the last errands I did was to run out the day before we left and get the Belladonna 30C and Apis 30C ! Luckily my sister in law advised me that altitude, jet lag, fatigue, hunger, thirst and dehydration, the dry air of the cabin ( all those lovely symptoms that can affect you while flying ) can affect your symptoms so remedies may have to be given more frequently if you are flying or jet lagged. As fate would have it, about two hours into our flight I woke up because I could hardly breath. My throat was on fire! I couldn’t swallow it was so painful. I sat there in the dark thinking what on earth am I to do. Then I remembered I had packed the remedies in my carry on bags! I got hold of the Apis and Belladonna. I did have to administer them every half hour for about four hours then it was about every two hours. By the time we landed ( it was a 12 hour flight ) I was down to one every four hours. By the third day my symptom were gone but my husband was complaining of a scracthy throat. His throat was very red and looked irritated. I suggested he try the remedies and he scoffed and said he didn’t want to take “snake oil “. I reminded him we were 10,000 miles from home and it was the best we had. He grudgingly took the remedies three times a day and by the third day all symptoms were gone. He still won’t admit that the remedies work but he is less resistant to taking them when they are offered these days. My children haven’t been on the nubulizer since I started using the remedies with them last winter and I think arnica is in production for my sons alone! I like to call my sister in law every so often a tell her another story about how the remedies have helped my family. She patiently helps me with whatever questions I have and encourages me to call her for any help. I owe my children’s good health to her knowledge and generosity. – Paul and Andree

I took 3 pellets of the Rhus Tox and put them under my tongue not knowing what to expect but not concerned that they would make me feel any worse than I already did. Within 15 minutes all of my symptoms disappeared as if by magic!! About an hour later, it felt like they were trying to return so I took another dose and “cut it off at the pass.” I never had another symptom after that and was so impressed that I began “feverishly”, pardon the pun, looking into homeopathics and came to own quite a few and use them quite a bit for myself and other family members.
